It was just a Fling...

I have lived in Chelmsford all my life except from my three years at uni and have never attended the Fling Festival until this weekend. I went on Saturday and it was great fun. After a year off the local festival returned to Central Park. My friend Amy was working there in the early afternoon so at about half 1 I gained my wristband and met up with her infront of Stage 1 with two Pimms Slushies in hand. Yes you heard me Pimms out of a slushie machine, it was amazing. I hadn't heard of many of the bands playing, had anyone? But there was lots more to do besides the bands. They had tents with cabaret acts, the big sing a long, accoustic stage and even a recycling bit where you could make your own hat. Mine had a crocodile stuck to it, obviously. We drank cider and pimms and sunbathed whilst making lots of new friends. I remember 'Dead Cannons' being pretty lively and the Dj's played some pretty good songs. I would highly recommend this festival to any fellow Essex dwellers.

GLASTO Dos and Don'ts...

This is a quick guide on things to do and not do in preparation and at Glastonbury festival. Bare in mind this is only after my first time of attending this year and is based solely on my experiences. Any comparisons to experiences of yours is completely coincidental...

DO -

- Plan where you are going to camp before hand. We didn't and ended up walking for miles, FYI we headed for Dairy Ground and it was a really nice place to camp! Close to The Other Stage and not too noisy.

- Prepare to walk far to your campsite! (we walked for an hour and a half, doh)

- Plan your journey. If you need the west car parks find out how to drive to them through the village which we WILL be doing next year.

- Keep checking the weather forecast and change outfits accordingly. If you pack well before time you will end up in flip flops in the rain like many girls I saw.

- Be prepared for walking as aforementioned, but not just from the carparks all around the festival. Don't wear wellies if it's dry they will just make you uncomfortable. I wore ankle boots and they served me well!

- Take suncream whatever the weather forecast and re apply it, although I did this and still burnt my face and chest.

- Wear dresses, leggings and tights if you are girl. (or boy if that's what you're into) I found this the easiest because you can put leggings in your bag. It does get colder later.

- Put all your preconceptions of what the toilets are going to be like to one side because they will be even worse than you could have imagined.

- Buy a cheap tent from Tesco, mine was only £15 and completely waterpoof, it was amazing!

- Expect to meet strangers and instantly become best friends, I met some great people.

DON'T -

- Sit on any toilet seats, they are rancid.

- Expect not to queue for things, toilets, water, food etc. You will have to wait.

- Forget a hairbrush, I did and seriously my hair was nearly in dreads.

- Think you can't wash. Me and my sister managed to wash at our campsite and washed our hair under the water taps. Just don't hold up the people getting water!

- Think you won't see anybody you know. You will, I bumped into my good friend Katarina and found out she was camping like 100m away from me. Also saw somebody I knew at Uni. It's still a small world even at glasto.

- Compare it to any other festivals you been to before, it's completely different.

- Worry about your appearance, even though I did wash my hair ( seriously I had to). There is no need to spend hours in the morning putting on make up I saw a guy just in shorts caked completely head to toe in dried mud and a lot of people in hareem pants and poncho's. Seriously just don't worry.

- Have a budget of how much money you think you are going to spend. That will go out of the window, there are 'Lazy Daiquiri's' to buy and jerk chicken to eat!

I'll probably think of more things later but that is it for now :)

GLASTO Part 2...

So Saturday. Looking at the line up there wasn't anybody we particularly wanted to see in the day but it being Glastonbury there is so much more to do. So we walked around and stumbled into the cabaret and circus part of the festival. It was mega sunny this day as well so we sat in the shade of the circus tent and watched some male jugglers and female performers. They had big metal rings and were like jumping in them whilst they were rolling?! Skills. So the first band we saw were Noah and The Whale. They were really good and I like their songs such as; "5 Years Time", "L I F E G O E S O N" and "Waiting For My Chance to Come". They are a real feel good band and it was so nice to watch them in the sunshine.
Now our first trip to The John Peel Stage was in order to see Johnny Marr. The famous Smiths guitarist knew what the crowd wanted and after one of his solo songs he dove straight into "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" If some of you aren't "The Smiths" fans then you might be thinking where have I heard that song before? Well it would probably be when producer come dj come singer Mark Ronson hashed together a cover with Daniel Merriweather. (youtube it if you want to sit through 3 minutes of pain) But Johnny definitely did it justice and the tent was filled with people singing a long.
Again we didn't really mind who we watched but I wanted to see Two Door Cinema Club. I went to see them in London earlier this year and they were insanely good and they didn't disappoint at Glasto. Dressed to the nines in full on suits (in 25 degree heat may I add) they properly went for it. I sang a long to every song and fully deserved to be on the "Other Stage".
We then made our way over to the pyramid stage to prepare for The Rolling Stones and caught the end of Primal Scream who had Haim on stage with them. The crowd were interacting well with them and and Bobby Gillespie didn't disappoint in his neon pink suit. Actually thinking about it there were a lot of well dressed musicians at Glastonbury I like that they all put in the effort!
So The Rolling Stones. Bare in mind that I was born in 1991 and most of the music I grew up with was trashy pop with a bit of T-Rex, ELO and Queen dabbled in (thanks mum and dad) I wasn't overly looking forward to The Stones. That might sound a bit blaisé but it's the truth. We were well amongst the crowd but pretty far back but the screens were working and we could see them on stage. They came on to Jumpin' Jack Flash, yes I know this one! Mick Jagger at nearly 70 years old definitely still has it going on. Wearing a sequin jacket he was jittering around the stage and his voice was still just as strong. The only let down for me was the guitar solos were rather long and I must admit we didn't stay right until the end, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

SUNDAY, last day booo :(

Because it was the last day we got up pretty early to take a couple of trips to the car to pack up our stuff because my sister had decided she wanted to drive home that night instead of getting caught in the traffic on monday morning. And it was definitely the right decision. So after many arduous trips to Blue East Car Park 11 we walked through to the Avalon stage and caught the end of Bruce Forsyth, strange act for a festival you might imagine, but anything goes at Glasto! He had a huge crowd as well.
We then watched Of Monsters and Men, Editors, Vampire Weekend and Mumford and Sons. Who were all excellent. Of Monsters and Men have such a unique sound and their album is sublime. Editors who I have seen once before at V Festival really blew me away, they have a really strong stage presence and looked like they were having the best time, as was I!
Now Vampire Weekend I was really looking forward to as I have never seen them before and love them. Their debut album was a genius mix of complicated fast lyrics and quick beats. They played all the hits off of that album including "A-Punk", "Oxford Comma" and "Cousins" and their new single off of their new album "Diane Young", which I need to listen to at least once a day to keep me sane :D
And then came the headliners Mumford And Sons. Now say what you like about the banjo playing, waistcoated foursome but I love them. They put on a damn good show and all of their songs are catchy and I love both albums; Sigh No More and Babel.

We left Glastonbury 2013 with a sense of elation but also a bloody good view as we walked back to the carparks you can see the whole festival and suddenly realise what you have been a part of for the last 5 days. It really is like another world. I can't fit into my blog the amount of stuff we saw and did and ate! The food is amazing, there is literally hundreds of different food stalls serving anything you could imagine.

BRING ON 2014.

GLASTO Part 1...

Okay so I was a Glastonbury festival virgin and had no idea what to expect but oh my gosh I recommend it to anybody umming and ahhing about whether to register and buy tickets this Cctober. First off it is MASSIVE. It will be the biggest festival you have ever been too. The largest festival I had been to before it had been V festival in Chelmsford and it's easily 5 times the size. The only down size to this is that we (me, my sister and her boyfriend) had to walk an hour and half from the most easterly car park to where we wanted to camp. To say our shoulders were in agony is an understatement. But once we had chilled out it was time to explore and get ready for three amazing days of music.

So the artists we saw on the first day (the Friday) were Haim, Jake Bugg, Professor Green, The Vaccines, Foals and The Arctic Monkeys, (FYI I'm looking back at the line up to remember these, it's so hard to remember who I actually saw!) In my opinion The Vaccines were easily the best all day and in contention for best artist we saw all weekend. They were so energetic and even though they were on the pyramid stage I could see them and hear them. They were putting in a lot of effort and getting very sweaty. I also have both their albums so could easily sing along to their hits such as "Bad Mood", "No Hope", "Teenage Icon", "Norgaard", "Wetsuit", "Post Break-up Sex", and "If You Wanna".
I had heard a lot of hype about Haim but only knew their debut single "Forever"; which I danced and sang a long too in the sunshine! But their other songs were likeable too. They loved to just jam as well where they wouldn't necesarrily sing a song but just throw in some ooos and la's and jam on their guitars.
Jake Bugg was excellent he is synonamous for being a quiet moody little teenage and he pretty much was seeing as he didn't sat one word during his set. But boy can he play guitar and sing well! I really enjoyed his set.
Professor Green was as you'd expect, lively  and 'havin' it!' His crowd wasn't as large as expected due to his stage time of 5 pm but I enjoyed it.
Now to me the sound coming from a band and the quality is very important, especially in the large crowds at Glasto. And Foals just didn't live up to my expectations it was sometimes hard to hear what song they were singing. Although saying this I still enjoyed their set and 'My Number' went down a storm!
Arctic Monkeys, Arctic Monkeys, Arctic Monkeys, where do I even begin. For me they were a let down. Well the technical side was a let down on Glastonbury's part. The screens weren't working for 90% of their set. This meaning that us stood at the very right to the stage could not see a damn thing. Their sound wasn't very loud either and it just didn't seem like they were making very much effort. Also at the end of their short set I expected an encore so waited for near on 20 minutes and they still hadn't come back so us and many other people bailed. Then later on I hear that they did actually do an encore. Which makes me angry because it didn't seem like they were there for the fans at all.

Okay this is part one check back later for part 2. Also I'm going to do a DO's an DON'Ts for the festival at a later date to help out all you newbies.

I also took lots of photos with a weird film camera I had so will do a photo post!
